New Year wishes

Read, find evidence, and explain in your own words.

Spring Festival begins the traditional lunar new year. Before it, many families clean, prepare food and put up decorations. Some place spring couplets beside the door: wishes for the year written on red paper, with two vertical lines and sometimes a horizontal heading.

On New Year’s Eve, families often share a reunion meal. Foods vary: dumplings, rice cakes or other family dishes may appear. People far away can send greetings by phone or video. Ways of gathering change, while care for one another remains.

For New Year greetings, you can say Happy New Year or offer a more personal wish. Think of something a friend is learning or a relative hopes to do. The festival can be a chance to show care, rather than compare how many gifts people receive.

This is a modern introduction to common customs, not an ancient passage. Practices differ across families and regions. Couplets connect with our word-pairing lesson, although formal couplets have more detailed sound rules.
