A tiger caught a fox in the forest and was about to eat it. The frightened fox put on a confident manner. It claimed that the ruler of heaven had placed it in charge of all the animals, so everyone feared it. The tiger was doubtful.

The fox invited the tiger to follow and see for itself. The fox walked ahead with the tiger behind. Animals that saw them turned and ran. Looking back, the fox seemed to say that this proved its claim.

Seeing the animals flee, the tiger believed that they feared the fox. It failed to consider that they could also see the tiger behind. The fox had borrowed the tiger’s power and passed it off as its own.

This child-friendly retelling follows the version in Strategies of the Warring States, Chu I. Here jia means borrow, not holiday. A result needs an explanation: animals running away does not prove they feared the fox.
